English
English is at the core of what we offer, helping young people build the skills they need to progress into further study, work and everyday life. We offer accredited English pathways, including NCFE/Pearson Functional Skills, from RARPA and Entry Level through to Level 2.
Programme of study
Course Outline
All Craftworks students work on English as part of their programme. English is taught as a stand-alone subject and embedded across vocational learning, so students practise reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication in real contexts.
Learning may include reading key texts, discussing current topics, building vocabulary, writing for different purposes and developing confidence in everyday communication.Students work towards personalised targets based on their individual starting point.
Depending on their pathway, students may work towards Functional Skills, components of learning, recognised qualifications or RARPA targets.
Levels
Targets for English are agreed with each young person so they understand what they are working towards and how this supports their next steps.
Students working towards a qualification can follow an appropriate Functional Skills pathway. Students who have already achieved the appropriate Functional Skills level continue to receive support in areas that need development and may work towards further preparation where this supports their next steps. Progress is reviewed regularly so that learning remains relevant, achievable and appropriately challenging.
Sites
All sites deliver the English curriculum.
English learning takes place within the wider Craftworks timetable and may be delivered in classrooms, practical areas and vocational settings.
This helps students connect English skills to everyday life, work-related learning, communication, independence and their own personal goals.
Key Skill Development
Provides students with key skills needed to thrive both now and in their future. Students benefit from the Personal Development Curriculum to support them in Preparing for Adulthood with focussed sessions exploring three key areas: Myself, Community and Independence.
These are worked on daily to support student achievement. Interventions support students identified needs, from their Education and Health Care plans and initial assessments. All students aims are broken down into managable small targets in collaboration with the student and regularly reviewed.
Supports students in expanding their horizons by providing opportunities to engage in on site activities and off site community engagement. We host guest speakers to discuss local community opportunities and connections to local services, thus facilitating exploration of talents and interests.
Pathways
At Craftworks College, we are aware that all our students progress at their own rate therefore our pathways adopt the waves model of intervention to enable all students to succeed from their individual starting points. Students capable of achieving a full qualification follow the Universal Pathway.
Students that need their learning broken into smaller steps follow the Targeted Pathway, here they focus on one unit at a time and achieve Unit Accreditation.
Students that require our Specialist Pathway have a bespoke timetable which breaks learning down into even smaller steps to ensure that they are able to achieve at their own specific level.
